Default Royal Devon Yeomanry bullion badge

Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has any info on this Royal Devon Yeomanry bullion badge?

Could it be an officer's field service cap badge?

Mick

Default RDY bullion badge

I cannot recall details but this has been made for the remnants of the RDY who are now a TA infantry unit with The Rifles.

It is very similar to the old Staffs Yeomanry beret badge- the red triangle was taken from the logo of Bass Breweries as the CO at that time owned that brewery and took the opportunity for a little self advertisement!

Stephen.

Default Staffs Yeo

An extract from our article on the Staffs Yeo published (in French) in Militaria (the source is the excellent Regimental Museum):

While stationed at Hadera, Palestine [in late 1941] undergoing mechanisation, the subject of dress and the black beret was discussed at a Commanding Officer’s conference for Squadron Leaders. It had been agreed that the other ranks should wear their Staffordshire knot badge of a circular red felt backing. The officers’ badge is larger and a more complex design, thought unsuited for a circular backing. The Squadron Leader of HQ Squadron suggested that not only on account of the shape of the badge , but also because of the “honourable position held in civilian life by our respected Second in Command, Major James Eadie, that the scarlet behind the officers’ badge should be triangular in shape.” Only later did the other officers realise that the red triangle was the trademark of Bass brewery – and that Major (later Lieutenant Colonel) Eadie’s civilian job had been sales director for Bass beer!

This appears to be an Officers bullion badge to the 1st Devon Rifle Vols RDY. This regiment never made it past the drawing board. The anodised badge got as far as samples produced then the order was cancelled .
So it would likely to be a sample of the Officers beret badge. It wouldnt have been worn.I would bet it is very scarce as the anodised version only had 6 samples made.

Thanks Mike!

If that's the case then its a very good pickup.
