Cameronians/Scottish Rifles
Good morning.
Some little while ago I was passed a group of items to a member of this Regiment. They included details of his name, rank (I assume) and Regimental Number, which are: CSM King, 10254. I assume "CSM" is Company Sargent Major, but they might just be his initials! The group includes his cap badge inscribed with rank (?), name and Number, in hallmarked silver (London 1916/17), and his hallmarked cigarette case (Birmingham 1925/6), and a small (9CT gold-plate on silver) sweetheart locket including a picture of, I assume, CSM King, or his son, in uniform, and his sweetheart. I am undecided what to do with the items but would welcome any information Members may be able to provide as I have not the resources to investigate CSM King further. And, I do not want to split them up. If anyone would like to give this group of items a happy home, please do let me know. Regards BB. |

Hi,
Company Sergeant Major William H. King, 2nd Scot.Rifles, DCM. Kingland Road, London. Don’t think his Service Record survived. I think it should be straight forward to get census details from this. His citation is in the burn records collection. Bryan |

CSM King
A nice group of items. CSM William H King was an Old Contemptible who landed in France as part of the BEF in 1914 and was a "Mons Star" man. Despite being in the Scottish Rifles he appears to have been a Londoner. In 1918 he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for superb leadership in action. I have attached his medal index card and the DCM Citation for you to see. I would guess that some of these items may have been presented to him on his retirement from the regiment.

A quick census check is proving more difficult. Kingsland Road is a major road north of the Thames. A possibility may be a William King b.1883 Kingsland Road, Railway Porter, married.
On a MIC it says replacement 14 Jun 1967, not sure if that is for the DCM, maybe some family member was looking then? Bryan |

Cameronians/Scottish Rifles
Good evening.
Many thanks to Members for their help so far. I can find two Kingsland Roads in London, one in Newham, just off the A124, and one north of Liverpool Street Station, the A10. No idea which one is correct I am afraid. But, the latter would tie in with a Railway Porter. And, the London connection is viable, as the items came originally from the Tunbridge Wells area. Please forgive my ignorance, but what is the "burn records collection"? Where is it, and can anyone access it? Many thanks for the MIC and Citation, that is most impressive. I do wonder where his medals now reside. Any further help much appreciated. Regards BB. |

Hi, the burnt records, refer to those Service Records which which were burnt when German bombing destroyed the bulk of WW1 military records. I believe about 30% survived. Many were salvaged but burnt, especially around the edges. My grandfather and 3 other brothers served in WW1 but only 1 Record survived. I searched on Findmypast against this Service Number and no Service Record was found. A Citation for his DCM stated an address of Kingsland Road, London, N, so I presumed the A10 as well, but the William I stated was born on that road but not living there in 1911, the last census available. Very tricky to pin him down, maybe newspaper accounts.

Cameronians/Scottish Rifles
Good evening.
Many thanks for that added detail. I now understand the reference to burnt records. I will persue the local papers angle when time permits. Would it be worth me searching for his medals? Presumably they will be listed in the catalogues of any of the main dealers, if of course they have appeared over the years? Or can anyone recommend a Great War medal Forum I might try? Regards BB |
