Default Imperial German Eagle but who wore it?
Can anyone enlighten me on who would have worn this badge?

Looks like Kings Royal Hussars - Insignia, Organisation. Beret. Kings Royal Hussars. All Ranks. Dead gilt & burnished. NSN 8455-99-876-0491

Thank you.

The 14th Hussars were my initial thought when I bought it. I do not understand why the Imperial German initials F.R. are featured on the eagle's breast.

Something related to Princess Frederica Charlotte of Prussia (Friederike Charlotte Ulrike Katharina; 7 May 1767 – 6 August 1820) was a Prussian princess by birth and a British princess by marriage. She was the eldest daughter of King Frederick William II of Prussia and the wife of Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, second son of King George III of the United Kingdom.
The regiment (later 14th Hussars) was renamed for Princess Frederica in 1798 as the 14th (The Duchess of York's Own) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons and allowed to use the Prussian Eagle as its badge.

Tim,

thank you, I was aware of the origins of the use of the Imperial eagle but as far as I know the 14th Hussars never used the F.R. cypher. I have a pickelhalbe that uses a nearly identical badge albeit with a motto.

I have a Napoleonic badge, cartouche I think, that has FR on it. Have never been able to ID it, so maybe some how connected (not to the 14th Hussars though)???

The award was a mark of Royal favour, after the 14th had escorted her from Dover to London prior to her marriage to the Duke of York. The Regiment also adopted at this time the title 14th or Duchess of York’s Own Regiment of Light Dragoons, and changed its facings from lemon yellow to Brandenburgh Orange, the livery colour of the Royal House of Prussia.

I think the interesting point is that FR (Fredericus Rex) did not appear on the 'Hawk' cap badges of the 14th Hussars or the 14th/20th Hussars but was introduced for the King's Royal Hussars.

Thank you Tim, that is exactly my point. The F.R. was not on the original badge so why has it been added now? I am wondering who signed off the new design.
