Exactly so they are effectively double/treble medaled... :/

Only treble medaled if they are still living. Personally I think the Arctic Emblem should have sufficed. Interesting about the number of stars allowed, will they change that also? Cheers Brian

Yeah, seemingly they have as no reports of people having to return medals to qualify....

ARCTIC MEDAL
It is very interesting that if you go onto the Ships Nostalgia Forum, a place where there are a lot of former Merchant (and Royal) Navy veterans, many who have served at sea in conditions far colder, more dangerous and unpleasant than most on here could even begin to imagine, that their opinion on the issue of an arctic convey medal is very different!

Well deserved BUT a little too late!
Yes, where does this end, trying to be PC is a mine field. Many died at sea in the Indian Ocean, yet there is no "Indian Star". Further loss of life during the Madagascar Campaign when the Vichy French were ousted from their Indian Ocean colony! All allied troops got for that little campaign was a 39/45 Star, no special bar for them. This could of all been sorted out with a few cheap clasps/bars at the end of the War. Another issue was the non-naming of UK medals, but I do not wish to go there. Regards Brian |

I think I recall that it was the intention that there would be clasps to the
WW1 BWM for certain naval engagements. I also think that miniature clasps were made but the idea was scrapped ( or am I mistaken ?) P.B.

79 clasps were recommended by the Army and 68 by the Navy.

I have just ordered a White Beret and Arctic Convoy Association Cloth Badge for one of our RBL members to wear as he mentioned he wanted one.
As to the medal, I feel a bar to the 1939-45 Star or Atlantic Star which all already have instead of a new star, as is the Bomber Command Star to be attached to the 1939-45 Star Here are the different stars awarded and the clasp that could possibly be awarded for each star. [Yes I know many of you are aware, but not all] (How many could a sailer earn? I make it 4) 1. The 1939-45 Star could have the Battle of Britain clasp 2.The Air-Crew Europe Star could have the Atlantic clasp Or the France and Germany clasp. 3. The Atlantic Star could have the Air-Crew Europe clasp Or the France and Germany clasp. 4. The Pacific Star could have the Burma clasp. or 5. The Burma Star could have the Pacific clasp. 6.The France and Germany Star could have the Atlantic clasp. 7. The Africa Star could have the North Africa 1942-43 clasp Or the 1st Army clasp or the 8th Army clasp. 8.The Italy Star (no clasp designated to be attached to this particular star). Arctic Medal
I have a neighbour who served in the RN and was on a ship out of Iceland, I have spoke to him about his knowing of this Medal and whether he qualifies. It was the first that he has heard of it.
Does anyone know the criteria required to receive this Medal, I have googled it but other then the announcement and what they went through, I have not seen anything that says the criteria. Jack |

Bugger!
That's the thing about collecting badges and medals!!!! Just when you think you have the set, something else turns up! Well done to those who have earned these new awards, I would much rather see these "late" award, than the "Buy your Own" bling that seems to be in abundance on remembrance day!!!! I also need a bigger frame "Bugger"! Andy |

Following on the mention of clasps.
I would liked to have seen an "Overlord" or "6th June 1944" awarded with the France & Germany Star. |
