Can anyone identify the insignia?
Not great quality as only an old photocopy, but I'm interested to know the patch on the sleeve?

1st and 2nd Army
First or Second Army depending on the colour of the Crusader's cross.
See top row. Tim

Thanks Tim,
It's my Great-Uncle who was a Brigadier so hopefully I will be able to find out which it should be! Regards, Andy |

I'd go for Second Army.
1st Army was disbanded on 25th July 1943 although the 2nd Army Group RA continued to wear the sign until the end of the war. It looks like he has a cloth title at the top of the sleeve. Is it possible to confirm that? It could also indicate a date as they were not offically introduced until June 1943 which would have been too late to have been worn by 1st Army. The medal ribbon nearest his collar could be that of the 1939-43 (later 1945) Star which means that any ribbons thereafter must be from the later period of the war, again suggesting 2nd Army. Knowing the officer's name would help. Jon |

Given that the posted image is titled CIV Jones (common surname but unusual initials) I carried out a search and obtained two hits, both National Army Museum. One reads:
18. Collection of 54 photographs relating to Capt C I V Jones who served in the Royal Artillery, from December 1919 to February 1955; associated with World War One (1914-1918) and World War Two (1939-1945). Photographs 2006-07-57 Just coincidence? Mike |

Yep, that's him. He got the unusual initials due to the fact he was born in 1900 when my Great-Grandfather was serving in the CIV - City Imperial Volunteers.
He was an RA officer so second army makes sense. Thanks to everyone that replied. I do need to visit the NA Museum to have a look at the stuff they hold on him. Regards, Andy |
