Parachute Regiment Squadron Malaya Cap Badge
Hi, Just wanting to know about the Para Squadron attached to the 22SAS Regiment in Malaya. In their Squadron Photo taken in 1956, is their cap badge Kings or Queens Crown? Can;t tell from looking at the photo but maybe someone knows.
Thanks, John |

The St Edward's Crown version was sealed in 1954, but, that does not mean that they would have received any by 1956.

A French photos from a sergeants mess album
Doesn't directly answer your question John, but you can see that there's KC on the plaques and rank.
Please feel free to send me any data you have on the para sqn as I don't know much about it tbh. Regards Jon IMG_9204.jpg IMG_9205.jpg IMG_9206.jpg IMG_9207.jpg IMG_9209.jpg IMG_9212.jpg IMG_9211.jpg |

This looks like a mess dinner marking a handover between squadrons. It depicts the Parachute Regiment Squadron 22 SAS with the New Zealand Squadron 22 SAS.
In 1954 22 SAS required a replacement Sabre squadron to boost numbers during the Emergency. The Parachute Regiment provided 80 personnel to provide the Independent Parachute Squadron. It was subsequently formally assimilated into the 22 SAS regimental ORBAT and became known as The Parachute Regiment Squadron (22 SAS). It was disbanded in 1957. In February 1955 it was decided by the New Zealand Government that a squadron based on the British Special Air Service should be formed as part of the New Zealand Army, as an effective and economic contribution to the Far East Strategic Reserve and the British counter-insurgency effort in Malaya. On 20 November 1955 the NZSAS Squadron departed from New Zealand and after completing parachute training in Changi, Singapore, a 133-strong NZSAS Squadron was attached to the British 22 SAS in Malaya. |

Certainly, from memory, the rankers badge was sealed on the 28th of September 1954, notwithstanding, my maternal grandfather was still wearing the Tudor crown in 1956.
