Cavalry Staff Buttons
This has been puzzling me for some time.
In the back of Howard Ripley's "Buttons of the Regular Army 1855-2000" Mr Ripley published some interesting extracts from War Office papers held at Kew. Page 63 Annex A part (ii) The Trumpet Majors of the Cavalry Depot Maidstone should be supplied with the Cavalry Staff Buttons and not those of the "V.R." pattern. 4th January 1861. I assume the "V.R." pattern are these shown below, but what was the Cavalry Staff Pattern? Rob |

I would hazard a guess that the Cavalry Staff buttons were no different to Infantry Staff buttons and that a generic button was worn, this being the 'Deathshead' pattern, subsequently worn by Chaplains for a period.

Thank you for the reply, is this the pattern you mean?

Yes, but bear in mind it is only my opinion. There are differing designs of this 'Staff Pattern' button, possibly denoting time-frames or even which category would have worn it.

Further to my last post, I would classify the attached as a period Staff button

Thanks again, I wonder if this design was used on "ball" buttons, that could explain a Cavalry Staff Pattern?

I doubt it. Wouldn't ball buttons be particular to Hussars and RHA, rather than Cavalry generally? Be nice if someone more knowledgeable could enlighten.

Ripley describes this at 475 as 'other ranks on the staff. Pre 1872.' He then states see Annex A, which I attach a photo. I cannot find the 'Cavalry Staff' button - I probably can't see the wood for the trees.
The original buttons shown and those by GTB he lists at 465 as traditional 'Staff' buttons and used by the RAChD in blackened brass and black horn from 1911 - 1930. Chris |
