Default Merchant Navy MN Shoulder Title

Hi All,

I'm sure I've seen this on the forum in the past but can't find it.

Can anyone tell me when the brass MN shoulder title was worn? Was it war time?

I'm presuming it was OR's that wore them rather than officers?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Michael

I think they were worn by 'Trainees' (Deck grades) post war during their training at Gravesend Nautical Training School on a blue BD type jacket.

They were worn by all departments Deck/motormen/catering, at Gravesend in staybright in the 1980's on navy blue NATO sweaters with white or blue shirt and navy blue trousers, and only worn by ratings. Previous to that, brass examples like yours were worn on navy blue battledress with a dark blue beret and silver cap badge, at some point cloth red on blue "Merchant Navy" shoulder flashes were worn too. They were worn, as said at the Gravesend National Sea Training School in north Kent.
