Devonshire Regiment Pagri
I came across two pagri while researching the Devonshire Regiment.
Was this one (4 DEVON) worn prewar? http://www.britishempiremilitaria.co...hp?shoph=52762 Was the one pictured (1st/4th) worn during WW I? I forgot which dealer had this posted on his website and I hope he won't object to my using his photo. |

As 4 Devon were TF I don't think they would have worn pagris pre war as they did not leave the UK. They first went to India late 14 and then to Mesopotamia in 1916. I am afraid I can't tell you which version dates to when.
The only other contender for the 4 Devon could date to 4VB rather than 4 TF. Again I have not evidence for this. |

The 4th (TF) Battalion (First Line) sailed from Southampton reaching India on 11th Nov 1914 this battalion became the 1st/4th. The 4th (Reserve) Battalion (Second Line) reached Bombay in Jan 1915 this battalion became the 2nd/4th. The Title 2nd/4th and presumably 1st/4th came into use in April 1915. So the first pugree badge could have been used up until this point?. The second pugree badge pictured was worn during WW1, as I have my grandfather's who went to Egypt with the 2nd/5th in 1915 and then posted to the 1st/4th and served in Mesopotamia and later in India. Tim.
