Default French SAS or Parachute

I know these are a little off track for the British Forum but I know they were worn on British battledress by some of the Free French serving with the SAS Brigade.

I have lost my notes on these so can anyone tell me who wore them and why there are both khaki and black-backed versions.

My thanks in advance for any help.

Jon

You have Paddy Mayne in the background, that's all I can say.

Dictionary definition of "uniform"? All the same!

Sand beret, maroon berets, pulled left, or right, cap badge, or not, FRANCE title, or no titles, FFL metal & enamel wing or French parachute with wings or not....

I love it.

Jon,here's your answer.
These arm badges are France's 'Brevet Militaire de Parachutiste de l'Infanterie de l'Air'.
This badge was originally created in 1938 and worn first by GIA* 601 & 602.Then it was taken by the 1er RCP** until 1945.
On black background;made pre-war...on black OR khaki background, made in North Africa in 1943.
Note; Copies made up in France in 1971 & 1977 for the veterans.

*=Groupes d'Infanterie de l'Air.(Pre-war para units)
**= Régiment de Chasseurs Parachutiste.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Pa...sseur_Regiment

From;Insignes de l'Armée Française,Christian Malcros, Sogico 1983

Hoping this will help
Jo

Hello,
Starting from the right:
Captain Pierre Chateau-Jobert, commander of the 3rd SAS, "Conan", he wears on his sleeve the badge cloth "BREVET PARACHUTISTE 1938 INFANTRY OF THE AIR"
Commander Pierre-Louis Bourgoin, commander of the 4th SAS, "the one-handed
" because he lost his arm in 1943;
As for the Colonel, I do not remember his name.
Hoping to have helped you.
friendships
Claude

Colonel Norbert DURAND.
Killed 22/01/52 -
He had a long career in North Africa, knew the people well and loved them.
And so, on January 22nd 1952, at Sousse,Tunisia, he fell on the field of honour, when, alone and unarmed, he tried to bring back fanatical rioters to order, to prevent the blood from being shed.Aged 54 years old.

I'm sure that's Montgomery on the left talking to them.

Hello,

Thank you both, I did not know him. I went to see his military career.
Thanks for the information.
Yes, I 'm sure also he's Montgomery.

Best regard

Claude

That's a great photo, I particularly like the Beret Basque worn by Capt Chateau-Jobert.

Default Pierre Chateau-Jobert

Eddie, The automated translation makes it a pretty "clunky" read, but take a look at his CV! Quite a character, even by the standards of "les paras". Mike
