Hi Tony

I realise that the maker is probably real...... but the badge I am showing.... look at the eyes and the way the slider is fixed (above)?

Below is the advertised image....look at the eyes (below).

Griff,
it's the current QRL issued Motto and 100% genuine!

Right O! Standards are slipping!

I bought this one from the same supplier as the Officer version..... is this good as well - its a mock silver ( I am assuming Beret.... but the long loops suggest service cap)?

I think the officers Mottos are smaller, therefore if same size as ORs it's probably a fake!

Hi Andy

It is a good one..... its part of an old Tailors stock. Its a Firmin 17th/21st Lancers Motto circa 1980's put into dress uniform Caps for the Officers (they would change it on a private purchase Hallmarked - if they wished).

Is this an AA badge?

Can't find it on Ebay or on T&V web shop.

Anyone got a link for the supplier?

Two types of AA Motto by SM..... one has blemishes in the eye sockets and another type is well struck. Note the position of the Makers Mark on each.

Hi Guys,

Shaw Munster are one of the few badges makers who made (make) A/A and 'New Metal' badges. I have corresponded with the Director, Mr M. J. Tyler, on various aspects of badge making in the past and he has been most helpful. Mr. Tyler was also a director of both William Dowler and Smith & Wright Limited so he certainly know his way around the cap badge tracks.

Griff, I know of a book that would answer truck loads of your questions too.

Regards

Chris

Chris

Mr Tyler's involvement is interesting ...... the "SM" Motto is that of the old Smith & Wright Ltd Motto (female die) and the "Dowler" Motto is that of Firmin & Sons (the one that looks like a copy of the Smith & Wright Motto). Dowler must have been a sub contractor to Firmin at some stage?

Griff,
once again I am lost as to how you can be so sure as to which die a badge came from??????????????????????

There would have been many dies used by many companies! The ONLY way IMO you can be almost 100% certain of which manufacturer made a particular badge, is if that badge bears a makers mark, anything else is pure and simple "Conjecture"

Best regards

Andy

Andy

Here is a test for you ..... can you tell which is the Smith & Wright Ltd Motto and which is the Firmin Motto? (there are 4 different makers of this type of Motto :- Smith & Wright, Firmin, Dowler & Shaw Munster)

I can...

Also.... can you show me a makers marked Firmin Motto (of the type shown) in white metal?

Griff,
to be honest, I don't really care!!! Any interest I did have in Mottos was eroded ages ago!
