3 Cdo Bde Golok
I decided it was time to clean up my trusty golok! Issued in Singapore in 1964 and modified to individuals' choice in the 3 Cdo Bde Workshops. The original blade profile was as per the white outline - approximately. The Bowie knife style of blade was deemed to be a "sexier" shape - and must have saved a fraction of an ounce in weight. I must now track down a machete forum! Mike

The Bowie blade makes it more practical for stabbing tons of condensed milk without affecting it's efficiency as a coconut sheller.

That's about the size of it. But we were young and image conscious then! The other "must haves" at that time were RAF aircrew sunglasses, RN AWD blue denim shirts and FAA flight deck boots! Mike

I found a pair, used them for the daily pre breakfast 3 mile runs, lighter than boots DMS, it was like wearing trainers instead of divers lead boots.

'Golok'
This 'Golok' was used by my uncle in Borneo (see photo). Clearly crudely homemade it has a good balance and feel to it.

Tim,
Fascinating! To me the blade looks anything but hand made - could it be a cut down bayonet or some other bladed implement. This "Kabar" was traded with a USMC officer in 1963 for a Pusser's issue green beret and RM badge. I think I got the best of the deal. Mike Kabar.03.jpgKabar.04.jpgKabar.05.jpg |
