Thank you for that. I have been in correspondence with Westminster City school and they did not recognize it as their badge but suggested that it was similar to the Queen's Westminster & Civil Service Rifles. The QWCSR antecedents were the 16th London Regt so that ties up nicely.

The Queen's Westminster Cadet Corps was commanded by a member of the Westminster city school staff so there was linkage.

I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with being a Westminster City old boy. Where the hell is Newport Market, just in case it the Newport over the Severn Bridge what's the connection with the QWR? A web search also comes up with Soho and Orpington.

ST, I'll agree with you on your comment about books, too many questions posted on here could be answered if the poster laid off the badges for a month and bought a few books instead.

Thanks Wilf,

A bit more info here, the Soho/Orpington connection makes more sense.

I've just found this old 1896 map of Coburg Row showing a Boy's School opposite
the Grenadier Guards Military Hospital in Rochester Row. A street search view shows the building still there as housing association flats.

Incidentally move up to James Street and the drill halls of the 7th & 13th Middlesex RV's are shown.

A picture of the Westminster City School cadets with their small KRRC style cap badge with the South Africa honour inherited from the KRRC cadets. All other insignia is Rifles as the KRRC's modern day descendents.

To avoid confusion:

Westminer School OTC cap badge. A separate school from the WCS below.

1st Cadet Bn/ Westminster City School Cadet Corps which is still worn today with a Queen's Crown. They were a KRRC affiliated Cadet Corps and then ACF.

attribution as the Newport Market Cadet Corps (16th London). It resembles the Westminster City School badge which may/may not be cadet related at all.

The old boy in the background appears to be wearing the Newport Market badge on his blazer lapel.

I think that he is a school master and the school badge is the same with a scroll underneath. I do wonder if the Newport Market attribution is an error and it is a QWS badge.

After a lot of searching I have finally found a picture of the Newport Band Cadet Corps in this Thesis.

https://oro.open.ac.uk/55240/1/20180...9015607%29.pdf

There are 2 photos and the badges are indistinct but much larger than the unidentified one above. See page 82. I wonder if they are wearing a lyre cap badge?

Found this , described as Newport Market School Band , London c.1900.

Don't know if it is of interest.

Mike

Yes it is. The FSC are the same as collars but again indistinct. The fittings in the badge in post one are not for a collar or military cap as they are too small so I think they are a school uniform cap. It would be nice to ID the Newport Market badges all the same.

Another 1930s photo of NMB CC
