Default AA Patch...confirmation at long last.

Hi Guys

I have finally found after years of looking, a picture of a South African guy wearing the double AA cloth patch!

I have a few variations of these but have always considered them to be British.

The orange SA tab can clearly be seen in the pic.

Hi Brian

Thanks for sharing that; the AA flash/title has been bothering me for a while too.

Do you know anything else about about the men pictured or their unit?

Regards
Craig

Hi Guys

He was a Anti Aircraft Gunner attached to the 43rd Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment SAAF, also served with the NMR.

Sorry cannot supply his name.

AA=Anti Aircraft.

Brian

Brian,

So is this an Air Force badge only?

The Regiment was initially designated as 43 LAA Regt SA Artillery from 8th July 1943 until 31st December 1943. It was then re-designated 43 LAA Regt SAAF on the 1st January 1944.

Hi Brian,
Once again an interesting thread. Talking of AA maybe you can help with this one as well. What does the patch on the side of the head gear represent? This is a photograph of my father, Bombardier Clive Beckley. Signaler Field Artillery Unit. South African Army – ‘A’ Battery 5th Field Regiment.
I look forward to your response.
Tony

This is the flash being worn on your father's helmet. Each regiment / corps had its own unique flash. The flash was eventually replaced by a bar under the badge when worn on the beret. The bars were finally withdrawn sometime in the 1990s as they were considered too "old South African". Regards. Dudley

Thanks for posting this pic, unusual helmet for the SAA, they normally wore the "polo" helmet common to most Union Forces in WW2.

Dudley has kindly answered your question.

Brian
