Default Red Badge Backing

I have picked up what I think is a South African collar badge converted to be used as a "Sweetheart" badge.

The badge has a piece of red cloth cut so that it is behind just the Springboks head.

Is this cloth something added by whoever made the badge into a "Sweetheart" badge, or does it represent something? Infantry perhaps?

Although cloth fades and ages in different ways I think that the backing is red, rather than orange. I have some slip on shoulder slides with orange tabs, and they are much more "orangey" than this backing.
