Hello, here is one for contribution. Would there have been need for this badge to be cast during this units existence?
thanks
Jack

Personally I'm not too keen on badges with concave lugs as found on this badge.
This seller has had more cast badges with identical lugs: No52 commando, MPAJA... which is too much of a coincidence to me.

I'm sorry I don't. It involves making a propane furnace to melt the metal then you need green sand to make the moulds etc. It really is a simple process easily carried out. Someone who worked at one of the modern foundries could knock out hundreds of really good quality fakes in a day

As I stated it's not beyond someone who knows how to cast metal to do it in the garage, I've not done it because it would involve taking up space and a bit of cash and what would I do with the finished product (ebay springs to mind)?

Here's another York and Lancaster cast example (thanks to OC14 for finding this one for me).

It has a makers mark I haven't come across before, anyone else heard of 'Nathu and Sons Ludhiana'?

I have managed to glean that Ludhiana is in the Punjab.

Ivan,

A quick bit of digging showed that the 2nd Bn Y & L spent most of their time in the inter-war period in India before travelling to the Sudan prior to WW2. In fact they won the Durand Football Cup (http://www.durandfootball.com/durand_cup_result.html) three times between 1927 to 1930. A look at some regimental history might unearth where the 2nd Bn was garrisoned at that time. This would then tie the item nicely to a local maker.

Thanks Rockape, a good pointer which kept me amused for a while.

There's a huge number of photographs in the Y&L archive from India of that period and the pre WW1 period (I know, I spent 6 months cataloguing them and others last year) and I am certain that there are photographs of the Duran cup winning team!

Having looked at the histories, the 2nd Bn spent some 17 years in India between the wars in various places including Dinapore, Landi Kotal and the Kyber Pass. The last place they served before going to Sudan was Ahmednagar.

The 1st Bn spent time prior to WW1 in Karachi, Jubblepore and a few other places.

I looked at all the main places the 2 regular battalions served in India and none are really close to Ludhiana so my search for the link goes on!

Cheers, Ivan

Ivan,

Perhaps there was a local (meaning in-country) contract made so the maker might not necessarily come from the Garrison area but further afield. I would imagine even at those times that commercialism could mean that the manufacturing company could be based anywhere that could supply the badges cheaply. If the Y&L were nationally known (by their Football prowess) then offers could come from anywhere.

Thanks Rockape, I will follow that line of inquiry up.

In the meantime, does anyone else have a badge marked with this maker?

Thanks, Ivan

Intel corps, looks to have been cast from a bladed badge. It does not look the same as the obviously modern copies.

Did somebody on the Forum buy the Leicestershire PAO Yeomanry WW2 "Sand Cast" from a dealers website?

I didnt buy it..... (yes.... there is a double meaning)

Couple of reasons:-

1. The 154th (LYPAO) FR RA wore the older badge mainly (1928-39 Type) from the original soldiers of the Yeomanry and then the new post 1939 badge came in with the new intake.
2. The top right ribbon end displays the classic Gaunt BHAM restrike deformity. Proper WW2 period LY badges do not have this...... so "if" a sand cast was made in theater it would have been from a good badge..... not a post 1970 restrike.

Shane I think you have a "normal" badge (and quite wel made I think!), a locally cast example would be more crudely made like my Middlesex regt badge that I posted earlier.

Like I said I was not 100%. Your right it is well made, it is cast but in a fine way.
Just need to know if any body else as seen one like mine before as it is different from the other run of the mill LF badges.
