Royal Dublin Fusiliers
This is not so much of a mystery, more of a simple question. This is clearly the Dublin Fusiliers cap badge, but what is the cat-like animal supposed to be - a tiger or a lion?

Many thanks for your prompt reply - something to do with the Bengal links of the former East India Company regiments I suppose? The badge, as a matter of interest, is a modern replica!

Yes I believe the link lies with the tiger and the E I C, and I didn't want to say about the badge

Yes indeed, tiger it is, see the attached from Farmer's Regimental Records 1901.

Never mind, you can find a real one without any problems at all, they are quite common.

EIC? I thought the RIF were formed from the Irish Volunteers, the Monaghan, Cavan and Armagh Volunteers to be specific. What links are there to the EIC?

The Royal Dublin Fusiliers Fusiliers (RDF) comprised 5 battalions in 1901 as shown in post with the 2 regular battalions having antecedent regiments originating in the HEIC. The Royal Irish Fusiliers (RIF) lineage is attached , the militia origins of the 3, 4 & 5 Bns are indeed Armagh , Monaghan and Cavan ( but are militia rather than volunteers in the "pure" sense) hope you are keeping well. sincerely John |

The National Army Museum, Chelsea have the hide of the Indian Tiger in their stores from the Officers Mess from when the regiment disbanded! The tiger represents the Battle of Plessey.
