Default OUR WORLD WAR-MANCHESTER PALS

hi all,

this is the 2nd part of this bbc series

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...rld-war-2-pals

it deals with the delimma of a Manchester pals private who is selected for a fireing squad

not being well up on the manchesters I just wondered how accurate is the pals battle and badge insignia

Philip,

It was a superb programme & I loved every minute of it,
However to answer your question I can make the following observations:-

1. Pals cap badges and shoulder titles should have been bronzed. In the programme they were shiny brass.
2. The Battalion arm patch for the 18th (S) Bn was two Royal Blue rectangles, worn parallel and horizontally. In the programme they wore a blue 'T'
3. I dont believe the 30th Division arm badge was worn in 1916.
4. The officer in the firing squad was the worst. He had shoulder titles, but officers didnt wear them. He had fantasy collar badges. He was wearing an Imperial Service Tablet, when he was in all probability a wartime recruited officer and not a pre-war territorial. He was also wearing a brass other ranks cap badge.

The US 1917 pattern fighting knife was also inappropriate for 1916.

regards

I thought it was a very good representation but I'm afraid I'm not enjoying it as a drama per se. I'm much preferring the documentary programming which is on at the moment and which we'll no doubt see (thankfully) for the next four years. Perhaps enhanced by the release of some files under the 100 year rule.

No Phillip, I haven't watched it. I was very aware of it (BBC3 wasn't it?) but having been pretty well read on the subject I decided to give it a bye.

BTW, ran into one of our old comrades the other week. He runs a taxi business in Lurgan. I'll PM you his name, you probably know him well. His wife was in the Comcen with my mother.

A VPN is your friend in this case.

Buy a VPN, connect to a UK server and then watch BBC!

Or just Bit Torrent it down

Hi all

I have a question. In the second episode with the Manchester's, did anyone notice that fuzzy thing one of them put on his helmet. I didn't think anything of it really, until I saw in a picture in a book on the Great war someone advancing over the top with the same "mohawk" fuzzy furry thing down the centre of his helmet.

Any idea what it was for?

Simon.

I've never seen that before and wondered about it too. It seems to me that the inclination of all soldiers was not to stand out, so why wear something which does the opposite. I'd be very keen to know the answer - if one is available.

Hi Hussar, yes I thought the same. I thought also it might have been quite simply a mistake or the interpretation wrongly of something else. But seeing the pic from war, it confirmed it must have been something of use. There again, there were some crack pot things thought up, they thought would help the Tommy.

We'll see if there is a real WW1 guru on the forum, and knows what it is.

Cheers

Simon.
