Default Sgts gun badge

Can anyone please oblige with a chronology of wear of the small gun worn in facing pairs above SNCOs chevrons in the RA (cloth, bullion, metal, other)? Illustrations would be a boon.
Also, were there different patterns of gun, as for eg. as found in early RA buttons?

The small brass gun was introduced c1906 and the anodised aluminium c1960.

My query was prompted in part by my trying to figure out an anomaly concerning the insignia of the Royal Malta Artillery, a unit which for 2 centuries formed part of the British Army. Whereas the introduction of a/a badges also affected the RMA (cap & beret, collars, band insignia), there appears to be no record that the small 'appointment' gun was ever worn. I would hate to display insignia for a unit which never wore that specific item. i.e. a/a gun. No problem with the gun in other materials.

The Armed Forces of Malta have continued to perpetuate its old Artillery tradition by incorporating the gun above SNCO chevrons, as also illustrated by these chevrons for summer wear.

Maybe this will account for the various odd coloured gun badges that are around, black on green, for one.
