RNAS Officer's cap badge
Saw this example recently, but have my doubts on the badge, altho with that age patina it appears at first to be 'kosher'.
However, I did note a couple of concerns: the central eagle is very large - it should be about 1/2 that size - it appears to be an RNAS sleeve eagle to me, & the central jewel in the crown is blue, & it should be red for that time frame. What are reader's thoughts on this badge pls? Bryan |

Does the cleaner bullion at the bottom look like it may have had an anchor over it at some point?

Hi Bryan
Yes, I saw that as well. I also think it is wrong. I wonder if it wasn't a merchant navy badge that has had some emblem removed from the centre and the eagle added. The irregular tarnishing on the wire looks false to me. Why the blue jewel indeed? Cheers, Alex |

Another thought that crossed my mind was that somebody with access to a bullion-wire worker had the badge modified, hence the newer looking wire in places.

The backing material does not look right, one of a modern badge not one of a period badge. The eagle is also oversize as you say.
It appears to have been made like that and not modified but as there are companies who do aged badges I think that's what we're looking at. |

Completely spurious, everything about it is wrong!

RNAS Badge
In my opinion this badge is 100% fake. The wing is wrong. The backing is wrong. The padding on the back is reminiscent of newer made items. It looks artificially aged. I have seen this piece in person and my immediate impression on seeing it was that it was a repro.

Still available on ebay with a laughable description from the seller.
