RWF Volunteer Bns
Was very pleased to pick up a bronzed, bladed example for the 2nd VB recently.
I know these come up in bronze and WM for the three Volunteer Bns, but I've also seen references to gilding metal and bronzed GM versions. Can anyone shed any light on what / when those ones were used for? Thanks in advance. |

Note the use of ‘Welch’ at a time when the regular battalions were still using ‘Welsh’, some years before the unusual spelling was approved formally in 1920.

Yes had spotted that - a nice touch with the volunteers leading the way!

Not really, the 23rd (RWF) had used it before the introduction of numbered regiments, when most battalions were only known by their Colonel’s name, although it’s perhaps fair to say that the volunteers premiered its reintroduction.

I wonder if the GM were contemporary with the white metal badges or one preceded the other (assuming the GM were worn at all, I would have expected white metal only as a VB) |
