Hi all,

I picked up the following badge recently. From searching the forum, I'm assuming that the badge is likely a restrike as the lugs on the rear are copper?

Any opinions most welcome,

Stephen

That's what I have always understood. Also, most of these had the lugs N-S though I believe there may have been some with E-W lugs.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi Stephen
I would not like to be too hasty to condemn it as an out and out fake for several reasons :
(1) It seems to be a particularly good striking (front & reverse)
(2) The lugs (although apparently copper & E-W) look rather nice and are expertly attached. (Can't tell from photo ... are they "footed" ?)
(3) According to my records (admittedly a bit out of date) none of the well known restrike "pedlers" have (so far as I know) yet put this one on the market.
(Perhaps Simon can put me right here)
If it does prove to be a "repro" I would guess Fox. Regards Jeff

Jeff,

Not one I have seen as a definate repro thats for sure.
I agree it looks a solid badge.

As to its age, like you I am unsure, its one I would have to handle.

regards

Thanks for the input guys. The badge came from the Crooks collection at DNW last week. When I discovered the copper lugs and their position I was thinking it may be a Fox badge as Crook and him would have overlapped. The copper lugs don't appear to have feet.

I've taken some better shots of the badge, again thanks for your input, much appreciated !

Stephen

Those lugs looked to be fitted extremely well, i would say an original IMHO.

Hi. Using my own criteria for deciding whether or not a badge is right or wrong i would consider this badge a copy. Although copper lugs on this type of badge are mentioned in KK 1ST volume i have always kept away from them preferring the lugs to be in brass or steel. I have come across genuine badges of this type with copper lugs but the lugs have the remains of being brass plated. Another point is that a few genuine badges did have the lugs set at east and west but more often than not the lugs are set at north and south. Marybrads.
