Byngs Scouts-Boer War
Hi, I recently picked up this badge. I am very chuffed with it, but have not been able to glean much information about this unit. Can anyone give me some more info? Have a great evening. Andrew

Hi Andrew,
A lovely badge. I'm guessing a version of the South African Light Horse. I have one but of a more conventional design (but with similar features). I would be well chuffed with it, if you get bored give me a shout. Cheerio, Roy

Hi Roy, thanks. They appear to have been attached to the SALH. Regards Andrew

Hi Andrew,
Certainly a fascinating badge. Not sure what the 'Byngs Scouts' reference, so will do a little snooping. Perhaps a small unit within the SALH..? Any chance of a photo of the back? Cheerio, Roy

Major Julian Byng of the 10th Hussars was sent to South Africa in 1899, promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and given the task of raising and then commanding the SALH. He later ended up as Field Marshal The Viscount Byng of Vimy.

Julian Bygn commanded the original SALH during the Anglo Boer War, it's scouts wore these badges, during the period of the original regiments existence from the 8th of November 1899 to the 7th of July 1902, they were not subsequently worn by members of the new regiment that had the same name, after the creation of the Transvaal Volunteer Force.

Thank you everyone. I am sure it must be rare. It is the first that I have ever seen like this. Have a grand day. Andrew

I think, particularly these days, all SAMIF badges are fairly scarce, in this case, their shoulder titles are rarer still, notwithstanding, I suppose, you could say the same for the rest of the regiment, as far as the Anglo Boer War went, they were one of the few early regiments that actually wore titles from inception.
