Default WAR DOG TRAINING IN BRITAIN, C 1940

IWM (D 448) Three Canadian soldiers (of the Toronto Scottish Regt.) with bayonets pose for the camera with their Airedale dog during a training exercise somewhere in Britain.

Question: what was the purpose of having a dog with an infantry unit...????

IWM (D 444) A Canadian soldier of the Toronto Scottish Regiment fixes a message to the collar of an Airedale dog, as two other Canadian soldiers look on, during a training exercise somewhere in Britain.

The photos of the TOR SCOTS with the dogs may not be as much about dogs with infantry units (as that particular unit was a machine gun bn during WW2) as the operation of the War Dog School. There is mention of the role of the TOR SCOTS in the following book.

Colonel Richardson's Airedales: The Making of the British War Dog School ...

By the 1940s, his reputation was solidified around the globe as a trainer par excellence of police, military and security dogs for civilian purposes. When World War II began, he again offered his services, but by then he was well into his 70s (see Chapter 10). While his dogs did see action (they were trained at times by troops with the Toronto Scottish Regiment), Richardson was no longer the guiding force behind the War Dog School.

And more than one dog
