If its a fake what makes it stand out as a fake?
In the interest of education and all that.

Apparently this is the OSD pattern worn in the Khaki Service Dress Cap. This pattern badge with the Regimental Title would ONLY have been worn by officers in an OSD finish. The badge they would have worn in the coloured Forage Cap would have been the Household Cavalry Pattern in Gilt and Coloured Enamels. And is an elaborate fake.
Lot of effort to fake it...
Who knew? Well not me obviously

Someone has gone to an inordinate amount of trouble taking one of the legendary "Ralph from the Rag Market"'s (in Birmingham) 70s/80s fakes to make it look rather special. (The usual ones are rather more crude, such as the Edward VIII "officers" enameled...) Inordinate, and possibly economically unsustainable...

But, as beautiful as it looks, as they say, you can't polish...

.......Oh, I'm sure you can if you're a Guardsman.

Others would just whitewash it.
