Default 4th Otago Regt

Hello All,
Could somebody tell me what I have here. This was sold to me as a hat badge, it appears that it once had a pin clip on (now missing). It has a J.R.Gaunt London tab on the rear.

I have since seen one advertised as a sweetheart badge.

Phil.

4th Otago Rifles 1911 to 1921 became 10th North Otago, earlier battle honours from S A war 1899 > 1902, common badge here in NZ. Looks like yes yours is a sweetheart type as pin is missing and the remaining lug is altered. would say yours is a hat badge and opposing collar badges slightly smaller but almost the same as hat badge. the 4th was at Gallipoli and France WW1. if you goggle 4th Otago Rifles you should find units history etc.

hat badge is 40 mm wide by 32 mm high and collar is 30 mm wide by 25 mm high. normally brass but bronze are out there {less common} most don't have who made it so yours with Gaunt is slightly better.

Hat badge that has been modified as a patriotic badge and was most likely produced by Gaunt 1915 - 1917.
