Question about this button (58 reg of foot)
Hey first time on here,
I was metal detecting on the Gaspe coast and managed to find abunch of British buttons, one of them being a 58 Regiment of foot button. My question is how come the 58 is on such a angle? Is there a reason for it or just a simple error? The research ive done i could only find 2 images of the button, they have a little marking at the bottom in the 6 o'clock position. When i set mine up the same way the 58 is off by quite a bit. Anyways if you want to see all buttons that were found in that area, here https://metaldetectingforum.com/inde...uttons.306247/ Any information is appreciated, thanks. The first image shows the "58" centred above the buckle the second above the tail of the strap (or is the second image posted to show that difference ?).

So its probably just a error then eh?
I just wanted to make sure because i can only find so much information about the button online. Appreciate the replies. |

The book "Insignia of Independence" lists military buttons of the American Revolution. The British Army is listed 1767-1783.
It does not show buttons from the 58th regiment. Military Buttons, the Emilio collection covers the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and later buttons: no 58th. Botones de Uniforme has a 58th button with 58 in a band (not a strap) and 3 battle honours: Gibraltar 1784, Egypt 1802, Maida 1807. Your button may date between 1784 and 1802. I would expect it’s later and from the War of 1812 given the location and that the 58th were there.

Wikipedia does not list a posting to Canada: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/58th_(...giment_of_Foot It could be shoddy button, i.e. left overs from the rag industry used as fertilizer. British shoddy was exported to the continent and possibly to Canada. |

so maybe thats why all of those buttons were in close proximity to each other? Really appreciate the information. |

Shoddy would also be used to make cloth.
