Default Unknown collar badge

Hi

I would be very grateful if anyone could tell me whether this is a 92nd Regiment of Foot Gordon Highlanders Victorian collar badge?

Cheers

John

Hi John
Thanks for that. As I'm sure you will know, correctly identifying these sphinx badges is a difficult task.
Some time ago I had the privilege of seeing the late, great, Hugh King collection of PT collars and his item for the 92nd was not of this type. However, I see Churchill shows two types for the 92nd, one of which is yours. My other source of these items is P.P.Holder's articles in "Crown Imperial" where your pattern is shown as 24th Foot !
The type he shows for the 92nd is similar to that worn on the bonnet ... the image of which I have somewhere in my archives but which I cannot download at present. However, will do so when I can.
The other thing that worries me a little about your badge are the copper lugs ?? For PT items these really should be brass ... but this is not a definitive condition, just a desirable one !
Will get back to you with a confirmed 92nd pattern Sphinx ASAP. Regards Jeff

Default 92nd Sphinx Badge

Hi again John,
Here, as promised is an image of the 92nd Highlanders pattern sphinx badge :
Admittedly, this is a bonnet badge in white-metal, but is I believe the same design (in brass) as shown both in the P.P.Holder article and in Churchill's book as Fig 1699. Incidentally, the illustrations in both are unfortunately very poor, tho' there is another example shown in "Bloomer" which is marginally better. I can only assume that both Churchill and Holder have seen the smaller collar badges of this type in brass. Regards Jeff

Hi Jeff

Thanks for assistance, which I am very grateful for. Dead Spartan had a pair for sale, which i was considering but will let them go. I bought an officer's solid cast 92nd silver feather bonnet badge from Minden a while ago which is similar to the one you portrayed, for a much better price than the one currently listed on A1 Militaria.

I hope you and your family have a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas and a great start to the new year.

Cheers

John
