Thanks Steve,
In my convoluted chain of thought, I was under the impression that most KGL shoulder belt badges were oval rounded towards the back, with crowns and belts depicted. This having a "horse" & "corners" and strange fixings, I had rigged it thus:- see attached sketch I'll let Georg (in Germany)- know your answer - he has the thing, which has been "polished away" . Michael,
saw that one. Very nice & would have liked it, but thought the price was a bit too high there. Maybe I'm out of touch with UK prices on these items? Cheers ! Steve |

Peter I would say that from the style of fastening on that rectangular plate it is a shoulder belt plate. Whose and when is another question.

There's nothing as much fun as resurrecting old threads. . .
. . . I acquired this about 30 years ago and was told it was Life Guards. I presume it's a bit generic, in fact. Anyone know? |

Queen's Bays Stirrup Slides?
Does anyone have or has anyone seen a Queen's Bays Stirrup slide? Either QVC or KC?
Here is a pic of my KDG items to jog the old grey cells! For those who do not know the bottom items are the stirrup slides... |

Horse furniture.
G'day Steve
Im happy to add to the thread but dont do photos (still). I have 2, a 17th Lancers bi metal martingale badge and also a pre federation (ie pre 1901) Victorian Mounted Rifles officers martingale in fired gilt. If you send me a PM with your email address I will send you photos which I would be happy for you to add to the thread. Also I saw a repro 17 L martingale badge in all brass that was very flimsy at a fair in Melbourne last year. I told the vendor that it was a repro but he wasnt very interested. And also again, QC Militaria have a number of items shown on their web site , look under cavalry badges (I think). Regards Phil. |

Agreed. My contribution. It looks to have had the main posts shortened and brass wire welded/soldered/braised (not sure which term is correct with Brass) in. It was removed from a black leather cartouche, photographed and re-placed. No pic of the cartouche though. Sorry. regards Darrell

I have greatly enjoyed this thread, first time I have seen most of the badges illustrated.
I am only interested in martingale badges worn in Australia. The universal pattern with cyphers (QVC and EDV11) werethe usual, both with ordinary crowns and "guelphic". There were other specific types (scans attached). I have a Medical Staff Corps somewhere, no scan available. 1st Australian Horse NSW (two types) also worn in black Victorian forces |

Is there a way to distinguish a bit boss from a martingale? I suspect - and looking for correction if I'm wrong - that the fixings on the back would be the main distinguishing feature.
Posts for but bosses, pins or loops for martingales (to fix to the leather). If that is correct, would it be right to say that the badge itself was common/ multipurpose, with the fixings applied later in manufacture?

Peter,
Your correct regards horse furniture, pins for bit bosses/ blades for breast plates (something against calling them martingales on the forum) . Generally the furniture is manufactured for both , there are exceptions to this where units had a different breast badge . Hope this helps Tony C |
