Default RND - Benbow & Collingwood

Dear All,

Given that RND battalions Benbow and Colingwood were disbanded prior to the production of all RND's battalion badges, would anybody know if designs for these two particular battalions' badges were ever proposed?

With thanks,

Peter.

Hello Paj,

Yeah, strange animal your RND; they always seem to me to have one foot in the infantry and one foot in the Royal Navy, and as a result, appear to be awkwardly misplaced somewhere between the two.

Having said that, I am aware that the men who served in the RND stauchly adhered to naval practices such as maintaining the use of naval language, retaining naval ranks, flying the White Ensign etc., so I would imagine they never saw it that way, particularly as the battalions were comprised of naval reservists.

With regard to the Collingwood and Benbow Battalions' badges, it does beg the question of how far in advance the entire RND cap badges (or any 'new' unit for that matter) were thought about. I was hoping somebody might have some info on this.

Decent point Paj - I'd love to know what they might have looked like if there did ever get to the drawing board stage.

Paj,

You are right, mate. After re-reading your post I realised I had misunderstood your point, and amended my reply whilst you must have been typing yours.

Apologies.

No cap badges were produced for either COLLINGWOOD or BENBOW. They were disbanded during the Gallipoli campaign before cap badges were introduced.
