39th Worcestershire Rifle Volunteers pouch badge and cap badge
Please could you kindly give opinions on two more of my badges. The blackened brass one is difficult to photograph but I think it's not too bad a pic.
Many thanks Martyn Last edited by Martyn123; 27-06-17 at 03:20 PM. |

Martyn,
More likely to be of the "39th ....shire Rifle Volunteers" rather than 39th foot. The silver one is an original officers pouch badge. The blackened brass one purports to be a other ranks busby badge but I am not convinced its real, but its just a suspicion at this stage. Lets see what other Victorian badge experts have to say. regards

Many thanks again Simon. What date are we looking at? Pre 1881 out slightly later?

Many thanks. The silver one is nice as you can see the plating wearing off on a variety of places where it been polished. Detail is nice and the screw posts are solid.

You have a lot of good quality items, are you a dealer or a collector ?

Many thanks for complementing my items, in glad that you like them.
I'm a very enthusiastic collector who would be a terrible dealer as I never sell anything due to my interest in history. Most of these Victorian badges were bought over a period of about a year from one antiques market near where I live. I think the owner must have been a long time collector who decided to sell his collection in a rented cabinet in the centre as I think it's all gone now. He had some really nice things but I couldn't afford to buy them unfortunately. Some of my other items came from a dealer in Abergavenny. This shop was brilliant as you never knew what you were going to find and he was sometimes very cheap and would often give you things for free. I've always had a real interest in history and love Victorian badges as this period I find very interesting. Regards Martyn |

Martyn,
I think you are lacking any comments on it being genuine as It is hard to call if some badges are original or fake from images and it is much better to handle them to be certain This particular badge (39th) is quite common as much so as the lower Rifle Volunteers bugle horn badges numbered 1 or 2 , which would lead me to believe there are a few 39 duds about. I will comment that I don't think the blackening is original and may be a bit chalky, that does not mean it is a dud and as I said it would be better if handled to give a fair assessment. Paul |

Martyn,
Most interesting, most military badges these days , especially scarcer ones, sell for good money so it is unusual to find dealers selling genuine items at low prices or even giving stock away. I dont suppose you acquired the items you have shown from South Wales ? Peter

Many thanks Paul. I am learning a great deal from yourself and other experts and value your feedback. I'm reasonably happy with it as the detail is nice and it has the look. It does look very dark and as you say may have been reblablacked to make it look better for sale.
Thanks again for your feedback. Best wishes Martyn |
