This may help. The HLI glengarry was dark green with no dicing. The SD & G High glengarry was dark blue with a band of dicing, scarlet white and green. With the fellow in front wearing the diced glen, and the shape of the badge and titles, it is logical to deduce the unit is the SD & G Highrs.

Hi Burton
Re-reading this thread I see that you had engaged MLU Forum already. Sorry, I missed that part. http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=27548 I did post back on there and had some feedback. Nothing definitive about the vehicle other than it being a T-16 and why are the access panels off. However an older thread linked there suggest SD&Gs on 6 June 1945 in Utrecht. Info provided by Wigger K. F. van der Horst using the photos of a Capt RB Gault of the SD&G. You may have a print of the same series of photos. http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9799 regards Darrell

Hi Darrell,
I'd seen the SD&G thread and was going to post it there, but my new account hasn't been activated yet. So thanks for doing that. It's definitely a pic from very late in the war or post-war, so it may well have been taken in Utrecht. Cheers. |

Apart from badges and buttons there are other groups of maniacs.
There must be a Dutch forum with people finding street addresses using pictures of buildings. Try your luck: https://www.zoekplaatjes.nl/ and http://www.onbekendinnederland.nl/ Last edited by btns; 19-06-17 at 08:21 PM. Reason: added website |

I'd start researching at the museum representing the SD&Gs, if that fails, get their war diary and note the different Dutch towns they were in and send that info to the Dutch image research sites to narrow their options down considerably. I'd work backwards from the liberation, everything looks too well scrubbed compared to wartime pics. The chap in the glengarry might be of a different unit just posing with the .50 for the photo or perhaps a piper of the same unit?
Those houses could be in any suburb in the Netherlands. Rgds, Thomas. Last edited by fougasse1940; 19-06-17 at 09:04 PM. Reason: further thoughts |

The Tam was the issued / authorized head dress for the field for Canadian highland units by the end of the war. The Glengarry was issued early in the war and were relegated to undress and walking out. They were issued to the entire unit earlier in the war. By 1945, the Tams were standard issue. The Glens were a bit of a prestige piece, old sweat sort of thing.

Some observations about the place the picture was taken.
As I said, very, very Dutch. Houses build in the 30's. Well to do area. Can be in almost every town around the country. Does not show war damage, but apart from cities in the front line (Arnhem comes to mind) many other places (specially Holland proper) were not really in the fighting scene (although some places were bombed by accident). There was however hunger in the west. Apart from the fact that almost every tree was cut for burning, you won't see much of that on buildings. I would not be surprised if those houses would still stand. Maybe a bit changed by e.g. more modern sunscreens. This type of housing is much loved these days and copies in this style are build in new housing areas.

Thanks Henk, I've not visited the Netherlands yet, so I'm going to leave that type of research to those better qualified! One day I will though.
