Guards M G Regiment
Any thoughts on this please as it is outside my usual area
of collecting. It is covered with a bronze wash or heavy varnish. Looking at others on the forum it does not have the same style font to the monogram, but the overall detail is very crisp and shows better detail than others I've seen, especially around the breach of the gun and on the garter strap. Dimensions are 49.9mm top to bottom and 43.3mm barrel to barrel. There is a faint crimp mark to the slider, which is not tapered. |

I hope you have got lucky as good examples do seem to have a straight slightly crimped slider- but I think the crown should be a bit more broad/wide. Regards, Paul.

Paul,
The slider seems one of the better solid examples and not the usual week stuff you see on the common copies, as is the body of the badge. Not too sure about the crown as it looks to be in proportion to the badge as shown on other examples. Andy, I'm not convinced as to it's authenticity either, but it might be worth hanging onto as it is much better quality than the usual tat. I did have a close look at yours, hence the reference to the monogram font. One to be looked at in the flesh I feel. Hwyl, Kevin |

It is a casting of possibly an original badge, you can see where the slider would have been positioned!

Andy,
do you think it may be a period piece due to Lugs as you have not seen one before the colour of the brass is good, it does not show this in the scan very well. or is it a Modern Stephen |

This was a short lived regt and there would have been one sealed pattern. In all probability it would have been slidered.

to be honest, cast badges were used to replace genuine badges during shortages or to replace lost items, but this was mostly done overseas in places such as India or where replenishment of stores was difficult! As Alan points out the GMGR were very short lived and the genuine badges were slidered, they also did not serve anywhere, where having to have cast badges made would be likely? The badges are very scarce and a genuine example worth IRO £250+, there are numerous reasons why someone would make a copy! Best regards Andy |
