Tie
I spotted on the bus in Ottawa today an elderly, military-looking gent, who probably worked for National Defence as I could see a chain for his ID tag underneath his raincoat. He was wearing a tie which had a dark blue background with the red zigzag pattern of the Royal Artillery (is the Royal Canadian Artillery the same?), but with small parachute wings (a bit like the GQ pin) superimposed on it. I didn't have a chance to ask him what it was, and he seemed to be glaring at me anyway. No, my flies weren't undone! But I was wearing shorts (it was 36C with the humidity today), which perhaps he didn't approve of. Who knows? Anyway, does anyone know what the tie might be? Some sort of Airborne Regiment of the Artillery?
Thanks. David |

In a Royal Artillery context I believe it's a generic Airborne Gunners tie which was certainly worn by officers of 33 Para Lt Regt RA in the early 1960s. I have no idea whether it is worn by their successor unit, 7 Para Regt RHA.

I was part of E Bty (Para) 2RCHA and they existed till 1995 when they went from L5 pack howitzers to M109s. He was probably part of the unit at one time. They were proud of the para status and hes probably wearing the tie to show it.

Generic Airborne Gunner Tie. Still currently worn by 7 Para RHA though each of the Batteries have their own ties.

It's good to see that the classic design has withstood the test of time.

It was an EFF Off pun. Groan.

Yeah, I got it. Groan is right. I just couldn't resist asking. I thought it might be a silent F, like the P in psychology, but usually EFF OFF doesn't tend to be very silent.
I must stop doing this. These puns are getting worse and I'm told it's incurable. Just ask my wife! David |
