Default OSD badges

I think my initial date of 1902 was correct as confirmed by Thomas, however with officers badges things are not always what they should be and I have a Royal Tank Regt KC cap badge die-struck in white metal that has been coloured brown presumably as no bronze OSD was available wherever the officer was serving.

I have kept this purely as a curiosity on my RTR board and no doubt other forum members have similar badges.

Regards Rob

Default Sufolk QVC OSD

I will be relisting this badge. I have contacted the dealer who does not feel a refund is justified.

The following will appear within the description on ebay (and has been agreed yesterday by Rod Flood)

OSD badges were worn in the Boer war 1899 to 1901 and at home as well. This particular badge was purchased by me from Minden Miltaria in 2015 and the site owner, Rod Flood, (one of the countries leading dealers) provides assurance that this badge is correct.

So are you saying that British Army officers actually wore die cast bronze finished badges in South Africa, on campaign, in 1899?

Frank,

According to this, NO they were not?

Confused by the description that you quote also.

Sorry while there are 3 facts there: only one is true in my opinion.

Here are a few facts:

The badly discoloured badge in question is a perfect match to this 1897 pattern ORs version:

http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ctureid=117448

Sealed in 1897 and worn on FSC with a 2 lug attachment. Note the same brazing holes and 2 part construction.

In 1902 this design was replaced by the sealed pattern with the standard regt castle. The regtl castle had been directed by the WD to be used instead of all Regtl style of castles on 30th Jan 1900 (not the badly made k/c twin towers on a slider despite what any dealer will tell you) with the 3 towers castle and lugs.

The lugs were replaced with vertical shanks the following year for wear in the Brodrick: and then shortened in 1906 for wear with the peaked khaki cap introduced in 1905.

The SD officers badge first authorised in 1902 would be one part die cast with blades. However the standard Officers headgear at that time was the Torin cap on which the officers wore an embroidered badge. This was later replaced by a peaked cap with a fullsize silver/gilt badge - picture shown circa 1910.

As for the Boer war, in 1899 the Suffolks wore Foreign Service helmets without badges. This headgear is shown in several photos of the regt from c1900.

Thats not proof for an OSD being worn in 1899.

I assume this means nothing then?

"My reputation as one of the country's leading dealers is very important to me, and all items are original and come with a money back guarantee......

Rod Flood"

Perhaps a boycott of the site if they do not honor their promises of a money back guarantee would achieve satisfaction for the unhappy buyer.
