White Metal Cast Scottish Horse
Having read some very interesting threads on the Scottish Horse on the Forum, I've been trying over the last few years (I'm easily diverted) to put together a small collection of OR badges. I've still a few to chase and before anyone says it, I know a set of officer shoulder titles has crept in.
The g/m badge and collar on the 4th row (alongside the button) have voids between leaf and oval, are die-struck and have Gaunt tabs on the reverse as can be seen in the additional photos. I've been trying to find the same die-struck cap badge but in w/m to compliment these, but all the w/m cap badges I have seen of this design have a 'cast' reverse which has put me off purchasing. Though I admit they all look the business from the front. I've seen a voided w/m die-struck collar with the same gaunt tab on one dealers site (though a little out of my price range for a collar), so I'm sure there will be die-struck voided w/m caps by Gaunt out there. Does anyone have any thoughts on die-struck vs die-cast for this particular w/m voided badge or would like to share an image of a die-struck one before I give in and get a cast one. Mark

Thank you for your input - very useful. The conundrum for me was that the w/m OR badges that I was seeing on some dealers sites were die-cast and from the same(ish) die as the officer's badge that you show in your first two photos. It raised a question mark for me (though of course they could be perfectly correct) in that both were of the same construction except the officer's badges were plated. Here I'm talking specifically about the 50mm x 32mm badge that is KK1388 with fretted (voided) leaves and not the smaller badge. To be absolutely certain I was buying a 50mm OR's w/m badge and not an officer's with the plating worn off, I thought a die-struck badge would be the way to go. If it had a Gaunt tab all the better. Believing they must be out there, but not finding one myself, I wondered what other members had in their collections. You've now shown me that they are out there - so my search will have to continue until I get one like yours. Very nice collection by the way. It's shown me that I have a long long way to go yet. Mark

I'm looking at your two badges bottom left and bottom right (KK 1385) in post 5. Hard to say from a small image, but the lettering doesn't look right. This is the one I have with fatter period letters. Worth double checking. Mark Last edited by dubaiguy; 19-09-23 at 10:38 AM.

Hi Tony
I did notice your unanswered post when I was using the search facility for info on the Scottish Horse. For what my opinion is worth, I think it is correct. The shape of the juniper leaves on the left looks correct and conforms to Rockapes and mine. As does the lettering and the shape of the H's in particular. Which is a narrow H but with thick verticals and horizontal. Mark
