These came with something else I purchased. I couldn't get the thing I wanted unless I got these with it. Also I don't know what the Horses head represents and the badge with the crossed Malay swords and the letter V, or the Arabic looking badge all of which are in the top image. There is also an oval badge in white with a deformed bird flying I'm not sure of. If anyone can shed some light on this I'd be grateful
My last try Thanks for your patience Last edited by James K; 06-03-16 at 10:50 PM. |

James,
Second picture, bottom row, far left is 55th West Lancashire Division and was worn from WW1 until WW2. A dealer currently has pair for sale for £25 but I have seen them for sale for all sorts of prices. Peter

Peter,
I find it quite remarkable that there appears to be so much variation in the price of cloth, depending upon where you buy it from, but, generally speaking, the older it is, the more expensive it tends to get. Regards Frank |

Thanks for the identification. I doubt if any are copies as they came from the MOD. They were part of a package only some of which I wanted and it was buy the whole or go without. So I doubt if they are copies, unless the MOD has been buying them which seems unlikely (not impossible, simply unlikely). Some of the ones which are stated to be copies for example the white horses head has been hand sewn onto khaki cloth and others have signs of having been sewn by hand onto a uniform [??] However I am NOT an expert which is why I decided to ask for advice.
The other part of the package from the MOD, which I did want, is an example DZ flash for every commonwealth airborne formation, including minor units. These are currently being framed. Quote:

Hello James,
Your last post is intriguing, I was not aware that the Ministry of Defence sold badges to the public ? Peter

For future reference it might be easier for you to open a forum file and when taken, just stick the pics in your new file and transfer when needed. I hope that doesn't sound too techie because basically I don't know what I'm doing myself half the time anyway ??? lol. Dave. PS, I might struggle but I'm having no problems with Win 10 at the moment ??

These came from a Regimental Collection (rather than a museum, which is now closed and the items were not required by other museums. Not too long ago the whole proof collection of badges was sold off. Just for information when the MOD disposes of anything historical or heritage the process is that it has to be offered to Museums for a period of time, if no museums want the items in question there is another stage and finally public sale. I got these through that middle stage, which requires knowing when the stuff becomes available. Museums don't want the stuff in general, they have problems displaying that which they already have. How depressing - especially to one who witnessed the manner in which the section of the MOD Library housed in Old War Office Building was dispersed completely at random (and without any coherent form of tracking) some 15 years ago. It was akin to book burning in late 1930s Germany. Mike |
