Arab Legion Cap Badge?
Hello everyone, I got this item off of ebay but I have no idea what it is for? It's seen to be pretty large. Would anyone happen to have a clue?
I am also guessing that it is from the 1950s? |

Arab Legion
I would say you have bought a very nice bullion blazer badge.

As Rob says, it's probably a blazer badge.
It might be an Arab Legion badge but the Police in Jordan used to wear a very similar headdress badge. I think the one I had was chrome (or white metal?) with a pin back. Not sure how to tell the difference between the two. David |

I've got one of those too - never been sure what it was for, blazer badge seems quite possible.
Not too helpful I am afraid but the difference between AL and police badges is in the inscription. One says The Arab Army and the other says Police. Eddie |

My only reservation would be that there were very few British officers in the Arab Legion and not many Jordanians wear blazers.

Well, they do come up every now and then. Could they be for veterans as well? I also wonder, how many British Officers countied to serve in the Arab Legion post World War 2 and into the 1948 conflict and sometime after?

There was quite a number of British officers serving with the Arab Legion at Battalion and Brigade level in 1948 when the war started. The MOD ordered them back behind the Jordan when the Legion advanced into Palestine. Most complied but they were all back with their units by first light the following morning. The AL was the only unit which was a match for the Israeli army despite the fact that they were heavily outnumbered and their flanks were unsecured.
Between then and 1956 there continued to be a fair number of British officers, both on contract and loan service. But compared to the number of Arabs they were very small. Eddie |

Just got an old copy of the Men at Arms Series for the Arab Legion, I note the author gives special thanks to Major W F Woodhouse RTR who served as a Capt in the AL from 1953-56 as the Technical Adjutant to the Armoured Bde and then to 3rd Tank Regt.
It also shows badge to the Arab Legion Flotilla! Infantry Officers collar badge and collar to 3rd Tank Regt as well as a couple of standard AL badges, also notes that the Police and the Arab Legion wore the same badge in silver but that the yellow brass cap badge was worn by the National Guard. As an aside there is a drawing of a Drum Major and on his sash is a large silver wire circular Arab Legion badge! Could it be the above? However I too think its a nice blazer badge.
