Thanks Rob.
Sound evidence of early post-war use of the camp too. Cheers, Taff |

The camp was used as a demobilisation camp up until 1921 but from 1920 onwards it was gradually dismantled and by the mid 20's all the huts etc had been removed leaving just the concrete hut basis and a few rubbish dumps.
Certain parts of the dump can be dated with regard to their use. The earliest dated pottery is 1915 when the camp was first in use (how kind of the WD to date their issued plates and cups) with the latest dated pottery found being 1919. The KOYLI titles all came from the same area along with a number of burnt pocket watches, brass cigarette tins, buttons and brass jacket belt hooks all of which suggests burnt uniforms. Close by, it was a similar story but with MGC titles. The cloth title and chevron (happy Andy)? came from a very sandy area and were mixed in an old bucket full of tins, bottles and crockery. Sadly, most of the dump and nearly all of the camp have now been built on. It makes me wonder what now lay beneath people's gardens! Ivan |
