The Lost City of Z
I just watched 'The Lost City of Z' last night. At the beginning it shows Percy Fawcett with his regiment in Ireland in 1904/05. His cap badge appears to be Rifle Brigade or something like it. Later, when he is in the trenches in 1916 during WW1 he leads his men 'over the top'. According to Wikipedia he was commissioned into the Royal Artillery and became adjutant of the 1st Cornwall (Duke of Cornwall's) Artillery Volunteers. There is no mention of the Rifle Brigade or such. As an artillery officer he surely wouldn't have been leading his men from the trenches, but would have been at the rear firing volleys at the enemy. An article in the 'Spectator' (see below) seems to debunk his whole career as a famous explorer (NOT!), and the author of the book took many liberties with the story. Likewise, it seems, with the film.
I plan to see 'Dunkirk' this week. I wonder how many liberties have been taken with it? David https://www.spectator.co.uk/2017/04/...i-should-know/ |

David,
I saw Dunkirk last weekend. An excellent film which covers many of the salient facts. You need to be aware that it runs as three timelines - Land, Sea and Air so you will see each event from those three different viewpoints and not in chronological order. Not much insignia is visible as most men wear steel helmets. However, the full Colonel on the Dunkirk mole is (incorrectly) wearing an RASC cap badge which could be explained by it not being his cap!
