All UK RAOC Depots were 'War Office Controlled Units' and the wearing of that formation badge is not unusual, and overseas attached personnel probably would not have worn it. The chevrons are probably simply creasing with how the blouse is worn. COD Bicester in Oxfordshire had a unit called 'Mechanical Handling Trails Unit' (MHTU) which as the name suggests did the trails on MHE & Cranes as well as running all operators courses for the RAOC. Operators for Fork Lift Trucks did not need to be driver trained unless equipment was intended to be driven on public roads, which could happen in some of the larger depots such as Bicester, but the tended to remain within its allocated 'sub depots' Still in my RAOC mystery folder. |

Another type of drivers badge.
Are these RAF and from what period? Also the "locally made" one seems to be on the same alignment as the cloth version, the other one is 45% out? Any thoughts please? Rob |

Hello,
Neither are RAF badges, both a drivers badges from the Army. The RAF had a similar badge for Apprentices but that had a propellor in the middle, whereas this is a steering wheel. They are worn with the spokes at ten too and ten past, the badges in the Australian display are positioned incorrectly for British wear (cant speak for Australian wear). I believe neither are 'locally' made and are just manufacturers variants. I have workshop made examples and they are in very thin sheet brass. regards

Thanks for the reply Simon, the one shown right is pretty thin and does appear to show file marks, it could be cast and hand finished or cut from thin sheet, either way its a bit rough and does appear locally made to me.

I have found some references to drivers badges in this Jan 1945 book, Its a Royal Artillery publication so I'm not sure if RASC and other Regiments followed the same principles or at the same times?
It quotes from "Army Council Instructions" quite a bit, which appears to be available at the national archive but not online? I'm guessing the second part of the number "/44" would be the date it was added to the "ACI". Rob Last edited by Rob Miller; 07-08-17 at 09:29 AM. Reason: spelling |

The /44 does indeed indicate the year the ACI was published.

Rob,
Very interesting, and also with the 1944 mention of the RA trades of Gunner-Mechanic and Gunner-Operator which confirm the unofficial 'GM' in wreath and 'GO' in wreath badges. regards

This picture has just turned up on another forum, is this a drivers badge with star worn on his stripes?
