Default Boss badges

Please can anyone identify these two boss badges.

They feature a two turret, and a three turret Gibraltar castle or Bury St. Edmunds Keep, similar in design to the Suffolk Regt collar badges.

So far as I am aware neither the Suffolk or Northants Regt wore boss badges.

There is a similar castle on a green boss which has been attributed to the Loyal Suffolk Hussars, but again, why or when this was worn is unknown to me.

Any information appreciated, Stephen.

John,

I cannot think of any reason why the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers would have a cord boss, save it were an embroidered collar badge with the flames detached and then the ball would be gold wire.

John

Gentlemen, thank you. I'll pursue these lines of enquiry.

Hi John, Sorry should have been more specific in my reply, i wasn't saying it was a Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Boss we are both aware there is no such thing. however the "Solid" as they are known on the boss, (in this case the castle) looks very much like the one in my photograph but without the flag. regards John

John,

Yours and the ones in the opening post would appear to have the same die fault running up the right turret as viewed from the front.

Yes, agreed about the fault line. The thought that flitted through my mind was that the two turret was pre-1902, and the die then changed to add a third turret in much the same way as was done for the Suffolk Regt bi-metal cap badge.

I just don't see boss badges being worn by the Suffolk Regt, however, I've never seen evidence of the LSH boss badge being worn either, yet the boss definitely exists.

Stephen.

Hi,

I have just come across this thread, which is of particular interest as I own the 2 boss badges in the original post.

I purchased these a number of years ago as Suffolk Regt boss's. Can anyone confirm if this is the case or not.

Both of the Boss badges will be for sale if anyone is interested.

Many thanks
Andy
