Default School of Musketry

I have come into possession of a badge that is reputed to be an early School of Musketry badge, however it does seem to be a little on the large size measuring 2 1/2"H x 2 1/10"W the two rear lugs are some 1/2" in length. The badge is in good condition without signs of repair and has good definition. Is it the real thing? The Red material to the rear of the crown could be original and is held in place by two separate brass blades.

Rank badge for CSMI SASC (after 1929) with 2-lugs, often worn on leather wristlet for short sleeve order in hot climates between the wars.
