A fabulous photo!! Definitely the elephant head badge of the NSW Lancers.
I can tell you that the officer sitting down is none other than the CO Charlie Cox himself, who rose to great heights later in WW1. The unofficial 6th ALH cap/collar badge with the fighting cock is in his honour. Sorry for the poor quality scans. Last edited by kingsley; 03-02-17 at 01:26 AM. |

Here's some NSW Lancers uniforms from that period.
On display at the NSW Lancers Museum. Enjoy! Mick

Question. Why do the NSW Lancers have an elephant on their cap badge ?

Quote:
The elephant's head is the crest of the late Lord Carrington who was Governor from 1885 to 1890. On his arrival in Sydney he immediately associated himself with the newly-formed "Sydney Light Horse Volunteers" as the Regiment was then called. He was honorary Colonel of the Regiment from that time until his death in 1928. Mick
