PAG shoulder title
Hi everyone,
I recently bought a few odd shoulder titles amongst which was a single PAG, which was a mystery to me. I've since been informed it is for Prince Albert's Guard, a South African Infantry regiment. Is it possible to suggest an era for this title? It is not in any of the (limited) reference books I have. Thanks in anticipation. http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ctureid=139922 |

Hi Kevin, it is Prince Alfred's Guard. I think it is pre WW1. Regards Andrew

Many thanks. I should have added its size - bigger than most British titles at Width: 43mm X Height: 17mm. If that helps in any way? Would this be a common find in SA? Certainly don't see them much in the UK. Kevin. |

The PAG, like the rest of the Cape Colonies volunteers of the period, had their badges and accoutrements made here in Great Britain, you do see some variation in size of the shoulder title, they are really quite common things and certainly do turn up here and in South Africa.
When the regiment expanded during the Anglo Boer War, you ended up with titles actually being worn on their hats, you also encounter examples that were made in the Cape during the period, these can often be rather larger than the norm and were certainly not intended to be worn as a shoulder title. |
