OK. Do we have then either a with or without wreath type badge with lugs rather than a slider for the period before 1906? Just asking because I've never seen anything other than a slider on the non-wreathed type.

I do believe the non-wreathed type was definitely worn by the MPSC but I'd love to figure out where this wreathed type fits into the picture. Not totally convinced in the Barrack Warden aspect but I don't want to put mine into the frame with my other CMP/MPSC badges if it isn't MPSC.

Cant say I have ever seen one before. This is the wreath one for comparison with the photo.

I don't think it is the same badge.

Looks a better match on a blow-up.

Here's mine, and an enlargement from the photo.

Default Dating GvR MPSC badges.

Good evening,

An article in The Bulletin Vol 30 page 1010 records that Barrack Wardens wore the Royal Cypher as a badge, identical to Military Provost:
1902-1911 (EviiR)- brass 29mm x 40mm with 2 lugs.
1912-1937 (GvR)
1938-1952 (GviR). (Info from Catalogue of Clothing & Necessaries 1949)

The Norfolk yeomanry GvR cap badge had a slider until 15.05.16. Sealed Pattern 8927/1916 deposited with Army Clothing Dept- Badge, Forage Cap with pin. KORR Norfolk Yeomanry. This badge was obviously larger.

I don't have the article but made this brief note from it.
Stephen.

Curiouser and curiouser.
So it looks like
1. EVIIR version with Lugs
2. GVR version with slider
3. GVIR version with slider
If the Barrack Wardens did indeed wear the same badge as the MPSC, going by the sizes quoted it would have to be the wreathless version ( the wreathed version measures 53mm x 43mm) - then who wore the version with wreath if it wasn't a variant MPSC badge ?

I haven't seen the full photo. Leigh Kitchen, the chap who posted it did however mention that the other guys in the group photo were all from different Regiments. Only the cropped image of that one Sgt was posted, so presumably the other guys in the photo wouldn't give much of a clue.

Actually he did mention that some of the guys in the photo were wearing medals ribbons from WW1, so that would make it between the wars.

Default Barrack Warden title

I probably got the Barrack Warden attribution the wrong way round - the photo you posted must be a Barrack Warden!

However, Collecting Metal Shoulder Titles by Ray Westlake shows the BW title at 1817 with the description "These were civilian appointments which were held by service pensioners that had a record of good conduct and held a rank of at least sergeant.
Shoulder title BW (1817) which also served as both cap and collar badge."

At least it shows that it was a British Army badge if nothing else. The tunic looks like a post1908 one to me but I am not a tunic expert and medal ribbons would usggest post war - odd that he as a Sgt does not have any. Either he never went to France or this dates from the 1930s?

Default MPSC

Just some related info on MPSC insignia.

17.04.24. ACI 234: New shoulder title ‘M.P.S.C.’ approved. To be issued when stocks become available.

12.08.25. ACI 412. Regimental collar badges for the MPSC have been approved and indents for one set of badges for each serving soldier of the corps may now be submitted.

11.12.46. ACI 1156: Issue of service dress to personnel of MPSC will cease forthwith. To be issued with battle-dress.

The following was gleaned from a Working Pattern on the Albums page: Printed shoulder title. Red with black letters ‘M.P.S.C.’
CB 2161. Pattern No 12572. dated 27.03.43.

1949 CCN lists CB 0626 as Collar badge for Barrack Wardens.

From a photo in my collection - The MPSC badge with wreath - unfortunately the subject or camera moved a little during the shot so the badge appears a little blurred:

Default Military Provost Guard Service

Hi Team

I have just come across a unit refered to as the Military Provost Guard Service. I've never heard of or seen this unit before. Are they part of the Military Provost Staff Corps? Any info greatly appreciated.

Hi gents, I don't know if this helps but this is a WWII female prison officers badge, it's small, being female issue, and is about the size of a large collar dog
