Default Pretoria Regiment Cap Badge

Greeting Fellow Collectors:

This beauty came by few days ago. Need your kind opinion about it.

I have read up the info regard of the units from wikipedia, but any additional info about the badge/units are welcome!

Any one might know why it rename to "Princess Alice's Own" On 24 October 1930?
Does Princess Alice have any relation with the unit?

Best Regard
Joe

Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, was the wife of the governor-general of SA. She was appointed colonel-in-chief of the Pretoria Regiment, whose title was then changed to reflect that fact. The "Princess Alice's Own" was dropped from the title around the time that SA became a republic.

As a matter of interest, her husband the Earl of Athlone was appointed colonel-in-chief of the Duke of Edinburgh's Own Rifles, in Cape Town, in 1930.

Dear Arthur:

Thanks for the reply and the useful information! I have alwasys been curious why the badge contain the sentence of "Princess Alice's Own"?

As you know it's kind of hard to find the relevant informatiom regard of the badges and units through Web. Finally got the answer now.

So what do you think about the badge? Is it a Period made?

Best Regard
Joe

Dear Joe

Glad to help with the history. I can't comment on the badge though -- I don't know enough to be able to tell anything about its origins. But I'm sure one of the South African experts on this forum will be able to help.

Hello Joe

It looks good to me and I would not see anything about it to make me suspect a reproduction.

I am not aware of these badges being reproduced anyway but perhaps someone else might know better about that.

The variations of this unit's cap and beret/collar badges make a nice set, especially if you can find cloth backing flashes for the beret badges.

Regards
Craig
