Default Argyle and Sutherland ?

I bought a few WW1 photo's yesterday here in NZ ,this photo come with the lot .I didn't think this one was at all a NZ volunteer unit but maybe a Scottish unit, perhaps the Argyle and Sutherland .Any thoughts of unit and era ,perhaps early 1900's .Any information may lead to an identification

Cheers Iain

Defo Argyll [note spelling] and Sutherland Highlanders. I'll leave a more detailed reply to the resident uniform experts.

I'm not too sure about the A &SH, did they wear trews? I would have guessed KOSB. Incidentally I was watching a TV programme the other night about the fall of Singapore and was close to throwing something at the TV because the narrator kept referring to the Royal Argyll and Sutherland Hldrs.

Thanks for the opinions guys .Perhaps one of two Scottish regiments then. I will go back to the chap I bought the photo's off ,perhaps this will jog his memory and shed some light.A bit tardy with the spelling sorry, I have a book on Scottish regiments in my bookcase ,just a matter of looking it out .

Incidentally my ancestors come from Strathglass (mothers side) in the North ,and Ancrum (fathers side ) on the Borders ,so have an interest in the country .I was really impressed with the countryside and the history on my brief visit in 1998.

Cheers Iain

Yes, the Argylls wore trews in certain forms of dress. The Glengarry is Argylls (no dark check on the centre line of dicing) and the cap badge is without a doubt Argylls. The KOSB cap badge from that angle would look almost square. I have not the slightest doubt that this guy is an Argyll.

Tanks Cruachan for your help in confirming the regiment .

From what I have been told ,the soldier emigrated to New Zealand ,to the very Scottish influenced city of Dunedin

Argyll's badge, Argyll's red & white check by the look of it, tartan looks ok for Argylls.
Even Highlander's had trews didn't they (they do nowadays) - originally made up from "old" kilts?
