Default Badges for sale UK military museums

In 1987 I visited the RAC museum at Bovington and purchased 1 each of the a/a hatbadges they had on sale. Do you think they will be OK?

In 1988 my brother went to a military surplus store at Aldershot and purchased one each of every a/a hatbadge. I can't remember the name of the shop. Any views as to whether those badges would be legit?

Regards Keith

Hi Keith,

We used to buy our leather banded berets in "Victors" in Aldershot which is now long gone.

Also in Alderhot was Henry Dubora's which I believe is still there. The chances are that the badges they supplied were bought directly from the manufacturers that supplied the army though a check of the maker marks would confirm this one way or another.

As far as museum badges go, These I think are in the main made as repros and from my experience aren't anything like the originals in many cases, being aimed at the souvenir market.

Regards

Ry

I have bought the a/a badges from the RAC Museum - 1984. They do not have makers' marks on the sliders.

Default A/a badges

The shop at Aldershot was Henry Dubora and all the badges from his shop are marked as follows:
J.R. Gaunt London
J.R. Gaunt B'HAM
Firmin. London
TKS
London Badge and Button Co Ltd

The badges from RAC Museum Bovington are made by:
Firmin. London
J.R. Gaunt B'HAM
?? Dowler
Dowler Birmingham

Am I in the clear?

Regards Keith

The old a/a badges from Bovington museum are totally induishtingable from the issued badges being made by the same firms. I do not remember any having blank sliders.

I bought most of my 'new' badges in the 70s and 80s from Du Bora's and have no problem with them. For some reason, I had to wait a very long time for a Royal Scots badge to appear in stock.
