Is there fake metal titles
I have a keen interest in WW1 brass titles. Do restrikes occur? I don't have any examples but noticed a lot on eBay and they command a lot of money.

Oh yes, there are as many 'fake' titles as capbadges, especially the more desirable units.

There are restrikes, strikes from new dies and cast examples. Everything from Tank Corps to Manchester Pals has been done.
It is sad that some people are intent on destroying the market for these. The motivation is the high prices some originals fetch at auction. I will not pay a lot for them myself because they are much easier to reproduce than a cap badges.

Sadly Keith there are shoulder title restrikes, reproductions and fantasy titles.
My advice, take your time, read up on these forums about what is known, and/or suspected. Don't assume that all eBay Sellers are thieves and bandits, or assume that all dealers and auction houses are 100% kosher (a high price doesn't guarantee 'genuine'). If you can, check the backs of titles (by magnified photo or better by eye), check for evidence of wear/cleaning, crispness of strike doesn't always indicate 'fake' (dies wear and strike quality can vary from strike 1 to strike 2,000). Nearly as big a minefield as cap badges. Good luck. |

Re restrikes
Gentleman, thank you for your kind advice. I have a copies of K&K, Westlake, Cox, Taylor and Major TE Edwards.
I will post some photographs for your comments. The more I read on this forum the more I am convinced that I have purchased poorly in recent times. Regards Keith |
